At least Nvidia seems to handle FPS higher than monitor refresh significantly better than ATI nowadays, with less frame timing issues. Strangely, I never had any weird issues like this on my 2x 290x or 2x 7970 CFx setups, but on my 2x 980Ti SLI, 1x GTX 1080, and 1x Titan X Pascal setups, I've had all sorts of driver weirdness like what's mentioned above.
